Built in the 18th century and gained its nowadays looks in the end of the 19th century. In 1937 the castle of kokmuiža barons was turned into a cshool. The granary of the manor is rebuilt into a modern sports building.
Mūrmuiža is first mentioned in documents from the 17th century. The oldest building of the major is a fortified tower built in the 16th century. It was intially the dwelling tower of the Livoniean Order outside the city. As the chamber of the village it was first used for sacral and then commercial activities. The renovated manor-house now houses Beverīna regional municipality. The building also has a room set up in rememberance of Zenta Mauriņa.
Burtnieki lake is fourth largest lake in Latvia, which is 13.5 km long, average depth-2.9 m, maximum depth - 4.1 mand width - 5.5 km. 23 reivers flows into the lake and larger of them are Rūja, Seda, Briede, Ēķinupe, Bauņupīte, Dūre, but flows out only one river Salaca. Burtnieks become one of the most popular destinations for fishermen, there are more than 20 species of fish. There are 6 boat bases in Burtnieki lake surroundings.
