June 27 and 28: Valmiera Tourism Innovation Hackathon

17.06.2020
In order to enhance the existing tourism offer and generate new offers for the attraction of tourists from Estonia and Latvia, we kindly invite enthusiasts and experts, patriots and friends of Valmiera – representatives of information and communication technology, marketing, design and tourism industries, to reserve June 27 and 28 and join a 24h hackathon.
In Valmiera, guests from Estonia represent the primary target audience among foreign tourists. They can be met at sightseeing objects and recreation places, at Valmiera Tourist Information Centre, in cafes, restaurants and shopping facilities. The statistics compiled by accommodation providers also show that tourists from Estonia account for approximately 25% of all foreign guest overnight stays in Valmiera (data of 2019). Valmiera is definitely a new, undiscovered tourist destination for many Latvian residents as well.

“Valmiera is the most Estonian-friendly city in Latvia. We experienced the presence of Estonian travellers in the city shortly after the opening of Baltic State borders. This summer, we also invite Latvian residents to ask themselves a question, when was the last time I visited Valmiera? The city’s potential to address tourists from Estonia and Latvia is enormous, and we hope that this tourism hackathon will be one of the platforms where to look for yet undiscovered solutions for promoting tourism. Let the hackathon be a great opportunity for industry professionals to take up the challenge of Valmiera, assert themselves and win valuable prizes,” says Jānis Baiks, the Major of Valmiera, encouraging to visit Valmiera and take part in the hackathon.

For 24 hours the participants of the hackathon will be provided with workspace, equipment, hand-outs, tasty, healthy and energizing meals, an opportunity to visit tourist attractions, and full information on existing tourism offer. At the end of the hackathon, each of the newly established teams will present the idea or prototype of the developed product, offer or service; meanwhile, an international jury will evaluate and name the winners.

For more information and application visit www.valmiera.lv, available from June 11.

The hackathon is organized by Valmiera City Council in cooperation with Valmiera Development Agency, Valmiera Tourist Information Centre, Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences and Vidzeme Olympic Centre.
