Monument of King Tālivaldis of Tālava

Add to route

The monument of King Tālivaldis was created by joint efforts of three distinguished men – Andris Vārpa (a sculptor), Jānis Lejiņš (a writer) and Rihards Circenis (a local patron and farmer). The monument was unveiled on 15 September 2011 in the centre of Trikāta, in front of the Community House, and it is the only monument in Latvia, which has been dedicated to an ancient Latvian sovereign.

The 2.4 m tall monument depicts the king who sits in a chair with his bird of fate – hawk – on his shoulder. The foot of the monument bears an inscription “King Tālivaldis”.

The granite rock for the figure of the monument was brought from Gulbene region, which used to be under the rule of Tālava, while the foundation stone in which the inscription is carved is from Trikāta.
