VALMIERA ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

The history of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Valmiera dates back to 1621, when the original church was built in Višķi, in present-day Augšdaugava Municipality. In 1937, the wooden structure was carefully dismantled, its logs numbered and transported by rail to Valmiera, where the church was rebuilt in 1939 and consecrated in 1940. Between 2011 and 2014, the old church building was replaced with a newly constructed sanctuary.

The new church respectfully preserves elements of the historic Višķi church. Inside, visitors can see an original oak log more than 400 years old, while parts of the historic timber have been creatively incorporated into the central altar cross, symbolically connecting past and present. The Stations of the Cross and a sacred image of the Virgin Mary have also been preserved. Informational displays inside the church share stories about its rich history and the life of the parish, adding depth to every visit.

The parish has remained active since 1940 — through periods of German and Soviet occupation and into the present day – with regular services open to everyone.
