STEEP SHORE TRAIL OF LAKE BURTNIEKS

The less than 1 km long circular nature trail is located in the Lake Burtnieks Meadows Nature Reserve. The trail starts at the Burtnieki Old Cemetery and continues along the meadows of the lake’s floodplains, offering a view of beautiful landscapes of the legendary lake and the steep shore sandstone outcrops – the only outcrops of this type in Latvia, which were formed as a result of the erosion by the lake’s waves. In the part of the trail along the very shore of the lake, you can feel the closeness of somewhat wild nature, thus closed and weather-appropriate footwear will be useful for the walk. The trail is equipped with wooden steps and several information boards that tell about the diversity of birds and habitats found in this area and the sandstone outcrops.

From the side of the Old Cemetery, which is located on the steep shore, you can get a wide view of the lake, but the cemetery itself is unique in that several remarkable and peculiarly designed tombstones can be found there. The chapel and the cemetery gate, built in the classicist style, are an architectural monument of national importance.

In the nature trail it is possible to follow the posts with direction signs for hikers. It is recommended to follow the trail in a clockwise direction.
