BURTNIEKS

Lake Burtnieks is the fourth largest lake in Latvia, which is 13.5 km long in the western part of North Vidzeme. The average depth is 2.4 m, the maximum depth is 4.3 m and the width is 5.5 km.

23 rivers and streams flow into the lake, but only one flows out – Salaca. There are two nature observation towers on the shore. You can go to one of them by walking along the less than 2 km long Vīsrags Nature Trail, which leads along the shore of the lake, while the Silzemnieki nature observation tower is located on the northeast side of the lake. From the observation towers you can see not only the beautiful landscape, but also various bird species, because the lake, reeds and vast floodplain meadows are an important area for both water and meadow birds and travelers. Burtnieks is one of the most legendary lakes in Latvia, but in appropriate weather conditions (most often in autumn and spring) it is possible to observe and capture a unique natural phenomenon – the northern lights. During the warm seasons, you can indulge in various water activities – swimming, boating or SUP boarding. The boat Made Marija also takes guests on trips along the lake.

Lake Burtnieks is rich in more than 20 different fish species and licensed fishing is also possible here.

BURTNIEKA ZANDER

It is hard to find someone in the far and near vicinity of the legendary Burtnieks who has not heard of Burtnieks’ zander. It is called the king of the Burtnieks and the most valuable fish that everyone wants to catch – both seasoned fishermen and beginners..
